I first heard about Grumpy’s Sourdough Pizza Co. from my friend, Patrick, who used to live in Saddle Brook. He raved about how good the pizza was and mentioned their unique specialty pies. Fast forward to today: I finally made it in for my first visit. The place has since been featured on One Bite, and it stayed busy with a steady stream of customers coming in and out the whole time I was there.

They don’t keep pizzas on display, but they do serve slices. I already knew what I wanted—Yelp Elites know to always check the menu and photos before committing! I went with the Hot Honey Heaven and the Plain Jane.

It took a little while for the slices to come out, and they arrived in a to-go box even though I was eating in. They didn’t ask if it was “to stay,” but I assume most people get it to go since there are no traditional tables—just a row of chairs along the window side. The vibe was upbeat with 2000s classic hits bumping—not too loud, but enough to give the place some energy. Even the ceiling fan seemed to be dancing to the music!

When I opened the box, the pizza looked incredible—glossy, perfectly cooked, and just the right amount of crispy.

  • Plain Jane: I tried the plain slice first. The undercarriage was solid and very firm. It was a bit overcooked for my personal preference, but still very tasty. I have a feeling if I ordered a fresh personal pie, it would be absolutely perfect.
  • Hot Honey Heaven: This slice (San Marzano tomato base, pepperoni, crispy chicken, ricotta, and Mike’s Hot Honey) was piping hot. The honey was already mixing with the pepperoni oil and drizzling off the slice before I even took a bite. The first bite was a total winner: the sweetness of the honey, the saltiness of the pepperoni, and the crunch of the breaded chicken created the ultimate flavor combo.

Pro-tip: While I was waiting, I noticed other people trying to order the Hot Honey Heaven, but there was only one slice left (luckily, I got it!). They seem to rotate a variety of specialty slices, so I’ll definitely be back to try the Garbage Pie and Buffalo Chicken.

Grumpy’s Sourdough Pizza Co. - Prosciutto & Pear Pizza
  • Prosciutto & Pear: I also sampled this one (San Marzano base, Prosciutto di Parma, sliced pears, shredded mozzarella, baby arugula, and balsamic glaze). It was an incredibly interesting combination. The pears were thinly sliced and didn’t overpower the pie with sweetness. Instead, they complemented the salty prosciutto, tangy balsamic glaze, and fresh arugula and basil perfectly.

I really enjoyed my visit and had a great lunch overall. Grumpy’s has clearly earned the recognition it’s getting. The staff seems genuinely nice, and the food speaks for itself. I highly recommend trying this place out!
