I love pizza, so obviously, I had to hit up one of the best spots Houston has to offer. My friend suggested The Gypsy Poet, and after seeing the consistent high praise and the aesthetically pleasing photos of their artisan Neapolitan-style pies, I was definitely looking forward to it.

The restaurant has a modern, rustic vibe with an open floor plan; there are rows of tables for dining on one side, and an open kitchen and register on the other. We ended up ordering the Pepperoni Madness ($17.99) and the Cappellone ($17.99), then grabbed an open table to wait for our food.

When the pizzas arrived, they looked amazing—especially the Cappellone “Big Hat”, which is topped with house tomato sauce, fior di latte, mozzarella, portobello mushroom caps, shallots, and Italian sausage. Each pie is served on a tray with fresh basil leaves, Romano cheese, and crushed red peppers. The artisan pizzas are 13 inches and have a nice char to them—not overly burnt, but just the right amount of wood-fired flavor.

The Cappellone was delicious; the dough had a perfect chew, and the crust held that consistency all the way through without ever getting hard. The combination of all those fresh ingredients was truly magical.

The Pepperoni Madness—topped with house tomato sauce, mozzarella, large pepperoni slices, and hot honey—was equally impressive. The balance of sweet, salty, and a touch of spice created a perfect flavor combination.

Overall, I loved my experience at The Gypsy Poet, from the ordering process to the atmosphere and, of course, the pizza. It was the only pizza spot we made it to on this trip, but it was a great choice, and I highly recommend stopping by if you’re craving high-quality, artisan-style pies.
