While I was researching taco spots in Houston, Tacos La Sultana immediately caught my eye. The image of a massive trompo being cooked over an open charcoal fire was all it took; after checking out the reviews, I had to mark it down as a must-eat.

The setup is classic: a food truck located in a parking lot, with a small, enclosed dining area right next door. I ended up ordering the Bisteck (beef) tacos, the trompo (pork) tacos, and a Gringa (trompo) quesadilla. I was especially looking forward to the trompo—which is essentially al pastor without the pineapple.

After placing my order, I grabbed a seat in the dining area. It wasn’t huge, but it had just enough space. I also grabbed a Barrilitos pineapple soda ($3.25); the bottle was massive and tasted like a more authentic version of pineapple Fanta—absolutely awesome.

When the food arrived, it looked incredible, especially those trompo tacos. They tasted even better than they looked, with a fantastic smoky flavor. I added some of their hot sauce, which provided a serious kick; it was legitimately spicy, so if you don’t handle heat well, I’d suggest taking it slow.

Since my Houston trip consisted of eating all day, every day, I was too full to finish the quesadilla while at the dining area. I ended up packing it away and eating it the next day; even then, it was still a massive, solid meal—though definitely heavy!

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Tacos La Sultana. Between the price and the quality of the food, it’s a spot you have to hit if you’re in Houston.
