I did a lot of research on taco spots before my trip to Houston, and I was lucky to stumble upon El Taconazo. After checking out reviews and photos on Google and Yelp, I knew it had to be on my “must-eat” list. The image of a plate piled high with fajita (carne asada) and trompo (al pastor) smothered in melted cheese was exactly what sold me.

I drove over with a friend, arriving around 9:00 PM. The spot is located on a street corner right next to the railroad tracks. It’s a takeout-only window with a first-come, first-served setup, and because it was the only bright, open business in the area, it really stood out against the night.

El Taconazo - Line

The line was fairly long when we arrived, but it moved quickly. I ended up ordering the trompo taco ($3), a barbacoa quesadilla ($4), and the item that had caught my eye online: the Plato Mixto Especial—a massive mixed plate of fajita and trompo for $22.

Since there wasn’t any seating, we headed back to the car to eat our food while it was fresh. I kicked things off with the Plato Mixto Especial, which came with a stack of corn tortillas. I dug into that cheese-covered mixture, and the cheese pull alone was enough to make my mouth water. My first bite of the trompo was incredible. The fajita was just as delicious—tender, flavorful, and perfectly paired with the melted cheese.

Next up was the trompo taco. I topped it with the green sauce—which tasted like a creamy avocado-based salsa—along with the cilantro and onions provided on the side. The taco was banging; it had just the right amount of kick. There was so much meat left over from the mixed plate that I actually loaded extra fajita onto the taco for good measure (I’m a “fat kid” at heart, after all).

Finally, I moved on to the barbacoa quesadilla. The flavor reminded me of birria beef. I added cilantro, onion, green sauce, and a squeeze of lime on top. The first bite was absolute gold.

Overall, I loved the whole experience—from waiting in line and soaking up the vibes to eating every last bite in the car. It’s rare to find food that tastes this good at such a reasonable price. If you’re ever visiting Houston, El Taconazo is an absolute must-visit.
