As per usual, I was randomly searching for sandwich and hero spots when I found Casa Della Mozzarella in the Bronx, NY. I saw the high ratings and checked out the photos online. The pictures of hero sandwiches stacked with thick slices of fresh mozzarella convinced me right then and there to bookmark this place as a must-visit.

After a long hike over at the Rockefeller State Park Preserve, I knew exactly what I was having for lunch: Casa Della Mozzarella. Everything seemed to line up perfectly as I made my way into the Bronx. The streets were crowded with virtually no parking on the block where the shop was located, but I managed to find a spot just one block away. Even better, right where I parked, there was a small park—Ciccarone Park—equipped with outdoor tables and seating. Everything was working out so seamlessly; it felt like this trip was just meant to be.

When I arrived at Casa Della Mozzarella, I didn’t realize there would be a line out the door. Customers had formed a neat single-file line along the storefront. Luckily, it moved fairly quickly; I waited less than 30 minutes from joining the line to receiving my sandwich.

Once I reached the front entrance, I waited until a employee called me inside. The interior has that classic, old-school Italian deli vibe—cured meats and cheeses hanging from above, a long deli display case packed with cold cuts and antipasti, and shelves stocked with all types of imported Italian groceries.

I already knew what I wanted: a hero of The Bronx Tale, which consists of sun-dried tomatoes, roast beef, fresh mozzarella, and balsamic glaze. I had seen a picture of this during my research and knew I had to get it. After placing my order at the counter, the line guided us toward the register in the back to pay. When I was handed the Casa Della Mozzarella bag, it had a very satisfying weight to it.

I headed back toward my car—initially planning to eat inside—when I noticed the tables at Ciccarone Park again. Luckily, one was open! I took a seat and got ready to feast.

Once I unwrapped the paper, The Bronx Tale looked incredible. The mozzarella was thick-cut, and the ratio of roast beef to bread was spot-on. Everything tasted ridiculously fresh—the bread had a great crisp and chew, and the balsamic glaze tied the entire sandwich together with a subtle hit of sweetness. I honestly wished I had asked for extra balsamic glaze, but regardless, the sandwich was fantastic.

I will definitely be back to try The Carcio, which comes with roast pork, fresh mozzarella, artichokes, hot capicola, and white balsamic glaze. If you’re in the Bronx area and craving a top-tier Italian deli hero, you need to stop by Casa Della Mozzarella.
