When I first moved to Sussex County, NJ, I always noticed a big fire truck on my way home, along with a big red and yellow banner with the words “Firehouse Bagels.” I also noticed that there were cars packed in the parking lot and made a mental note that my family and I would order food from there one day.

When I went in for the first time, there was a pretty long line. I took a look at the menu and knew I had to try one of their signature sandwiches, more of a hero, which comes with fries. I got the #9 Jersey Chicken, which consists of a chicken cutlet, bacon, lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese, and honey mustard. It took some time for my order to come out, which is understandable since the place was busy. But once I got my order, it had a nice weight to it.

When I got home and opened the container, the sandwich was huge, and the fries that came with the order were battered and had a nice crisp to them. The chicken and all the ingredients were loaded, and on the first bite, it was delicious and flavorful.

My family and I found our new go-to takeout spot for sandwiches and heroes. We have been going here a couple of times a month since we moved, and the place never disappoints. I do want to mention that the place actually closed down for a few months due to a fire incident—ironic since the place is called Firehouse—and we were sad that our go-to spot was no longer available. But as of August 2026, they reopened a few months ago, and the place looks nice, bright, and clean. It is busy as usual, so make sure you order in advance.

I have tried all types of sandwiches, from turkey subs to the Cuban. My top go-to orders are as follows (not in any particular order, just depending on what I am in the mood for):

  • #9 Jersey Chicken: Chicken cutlet, bacon, lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese, and honey mustard
  • #4 Grilled Chicken El Panino: Roasted red peppers, tomato, fresh mozzarella, and balsamic
  • #8 Hot Roast Beef: Grilled onions, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing

All the sandwiches are great, but the above are my go-tos, and I promise you will not regret getting any of those items.

I have only tried their signature sandwiches, bagels, and cold subs, but from what I have seen from the reviews, everything they make seems to be on point. This place is definitely one of the best places to eat in Sussex County, NJ. If you want fresh, made-to-order sandwiches and heroes, I highly recommend Firehouse Bagels (Branchville).
