I ate a lot of great food in Brazil, from traditional local dishes to popular street eats. But one of my favorite meals—if not the favorite—was the lasagna from Sult. As per usual, I did my food research before the trip and stumbled upon Sult; I think I saw someone mention it on YouTube. After seeing the photos on Google, I starred it on my map as a “must-eat” destination.

Sult - Storefront

I took an Uber there on a rainy day. The restaurant isn’t huge, but it has a great Italian-esque vibe. You can see the staff preparing the dishes in the back through an open kitchen, which is always a good sign.

Once I was seated, I ordered the Lasanha Sult Classic (LASAGNA DE CARNE CLÁSSICA), the exact dish I had been eyeing since I started planning my Brazil trip. Naturally, I ordered a Coca-Cola to wash down all that goodness.

When the lasagna arrived, it looked incredible. The plating and the colors were unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It was also massive. The dish features three sauces (grana padano fonduta, roti)—yellow, brown, and green—drizzled over the top and across the plate, finished with a panko breading (pangrattato). The yellow sauce had a strong, delicious Parmesan flavor, and while I couldn’t quite put my finger on what the green sauce was, the whole blend was incredibly tasty.

Sult - Lasagna

The first bite was honestly mind-blowing. I hadn’t been in Brazil long at that point, but it was easily the best thing I had eaten. There is a cheese crust on the top layer that is slightly charred, giving it a crisp texture and a flavor exactly like those cheese crisps you buy at the store.

Sult - tasting the sauce

The pasta sheets were perfectly al dente—firm and structured, not mushy at all. Inside, the lasagna was absolutely overloaded with carne (beef). I made sure to get a bit of every sauce, the panko, and that crispy cheesy top in every bite. It was the perfect combination.

This is definitely a “cheat day” meal because it’s so rich and delicious it can’t possibly be healthy! I’m sure everything else on their menu is great, but if you visit Rio de Janeiro, you have to stop by Sult and get the Lasanha Sult Classic.
